Just For Fun Concerts EP 2016-41 (Episode 45)
As promised in the last episode, here is a second helping of Tales From The Drop Box in a single week. Unlike the relative indie pop oriented version of that last episode, this one is much more aggressive in both form and content. Episode 45 attempts to uncover the diamonds in the rough of the punk world, a world sadly neglected by radio.
I believe that this lack of radio play is a conspiracy and that the election is rigged and rife with fraud…oh…, sorry, I’m watching the news and Trump just tweeted:
“Voter fraud! Crooked Hillary Clinton even got the questions to a debate, and nobody says a word. Can you imagine if I got the questions?”
I’m not the only one who caught the importance of Trumps claims that the election is rigged and other similar tweets over the past month e.g. Donald Trump’s baseless claims about the election being ‘rigged’; Voter Fraud -It would be literally insane to try to steal an election in the way Donald Trump is alleging.
So, you might be wondering …why is this such a big freakin’ issue? It is a critical issue because Trump is attacking the very heart of the system of government called democracy. i.e. the orderly transition of power and that is just wrong.
The natural condition of people in any type of contest regardless of your political affiliation or the type of contest is the niggling feeling that the other side must have cheated by having some type of unfair advantage. Recall the examination of unconscious bias in an earlier episode of this show. Well, Trump is exploiting those biases in this campaign – big time.
In Reynolds v. Sims 377 U.S. 533 (1964), Chief Justice Warren, in delivering the opinion for the U.S. Supreme Court, noted:
Undeniably the Constitution of the United States protects the right of all qualified citizens to vote, in state as well as in federal elections. A consistent line of decisions by this Court in cases involving attempts to deny or restrict the right of suffrage has made this indelibly clear. It has been repeatedly recognized that all qualified voters have a constitutionally protected right to vote, Ex parte Yarbrough, 110 U.S. 651 , and to have their votes counted, United States v. Mosley, 238 U.S. 383 . The right to vote can neither be denied outright, Guinn v. United States, 238 U.S. 347 , Lane v. Wilson, 307 U.S. 268 , nor destroyed by alteration of ballots, see United States v. Classic, 313 U.S. 299, 315 , nor diluted by ballot-box stuffing, Ex parte Siebold, 100 U.S. 371 , United States v. Saylor, 322 U.S. 385 . As the Court stated in Classic, “Obviously included within the right to choose, secured by the Constitution, is the right of qualified voters within a state to cast their ballots and have them counted . . . .” 313 U.S., at 315 . Racially based gerrymandering, Gomillion v. Lightfoot, 364 U.S. 339 , and the conducting of white primaries, Nixon v. Herndon, 273 U.S. 536 , Nixon v. Condon, 286 U.S. 73 , Smith v. Allwright, 321 U.S. 649 , Terry v. Adams, 345 U.S. 461 , both of which result in denying to some citizens their right to vote, have been held to be constitutionally impermissible. And history has seen a continuing expansion of the scope of the right of suffrage in this country. 28 The right to vote freely for the candidate of one’s choice is of the essence of a democratic society, and any restrictions on that right strike at the heart of representative government. And the right of suffrage can be denied by a debasement or dilution of the weight of a citizen’s vote just as effectively as by wholly prohibiting the free exercise of the franchise. 29 [377 U.S. 533, 556]
Free elections are the foundation of a democratic society and Trump can make any statement he desires about his opinion, but as pointed out repeatedly in this blog, words have meaning. In the hands of a presidential candidate, the opinion gives credence to those who believe that the government is designed to keep the working man down. To be perfectly clear, the reason why Trump’s careless and outrageous lies about the election being rigged without any evidence are just plain wrong is that these “statements” are but invitations to incite a number of citizens (who already believe they are among the disenfranchised and who already believe that the democratic system is rigged against them) into taking action to destroy the system. This accusation – that the elections are rigged – is an invitation to anarchy. If Trump, the person who aspires to hold the highest office in the land and become the leader of this democratic society no longer believes that the election process is “fair” this reckless accusation is simply the match to the kindling of discontent.
YOU have a chance to stop this lying anarchist from achieving his goal which apparently is the destabilization of democracy and the destruction of the American political system:
By voting in the free elections.
