  • Exclusive: The UK podcasting ad market is just a fifth of the size it should be; and Australia's isn't much better. Writing for Podnews, Will Page looks at the gap in the numbers and explores why all the podcasting money is in the US.
  • Acast is adding dynamic ads targeted to listeners on Google Podcasts which closes next year, pointing them to this blog post helping them with other podcast apps to change to.
  • Good news: While Acast says it's coming soon, Google has already enabled OPML exports from Google Podcasts, so you can take your subscriptions out of the app and switch to a new podcast app. AntennaPod, Pocket Casts, Podverse's mobile app, or Fountain are among those that support OPML imports. Bad news: it's only currently available in the rather geeky Google Takeout service.

"Would competition [from YouTube] make podcasting better for creators? I think it would make it better in some ways and worse in others. On the consumer side, people are very comfortable on YouTube. On the creator side, obviously people are unhappy with Spotify, people are unhappy with YouTube, they’re not happy with anyone kind of controlling a large portion of the market. But that comes with some advantages as well." - Headliner's Neil Mody, talking about YouTube, in last Friday's Podcast Business Journal.

The Tech Stuff
  • Apostrophes shouldn't matter for podcast search. Pocket Casts appears to need an apostrophe typed in exactly, otherwise it won't find a show. We've reported it as a bug; but the name of the show is a good edge-case for testing.
  • Posy, a professional audio engineer, musician and Youtuber, tests a €20 and €1500 microphone next to each other (and a €200 one).
  • Wallet of Satoshi, a lightning wallet used by some podcasters and podcast listeners, has pulled out of the US. You'll still be able to use the app if you have it; but you should pull your funds out and stick them somewhere else.
  • Podverse sends 10x the amount of value than the next leading v4v app, according to the latest Podcasting 2.0 podcast. It was only a one-day sample, but still...
Podcast News
  • UK comedian Joe Lycett launched Turdcast last week... but then cancelled it after mistakenly releasing "raw sewage" into Liverpool Albert Docks in a launch event... and then came clean that it was all a stunt - fake sewage, from a fake toilet, for a fake podcast - to draw attention to the UK's water companies, who release raw sewage into rivers and coastlines.
  • The Village Crazy Lady is new today from Podshape, hosted by Mikki Fisher. Mikki is the founder of The Red Tent, she’s a wife & Mum with a large following on social media. She also speaks to aliens & dead people.
  • The second season of sci-fi podcast DERELICT is launched today. After a giant door was found at the bottom of Earth's ocean, and the world went to investigate, the story picks up several years later: where the action has moved into the depths of space. Season one received well over a million downloads and thousands of five-star reviews.
  • A featured science podcast on Airwave: NASA’s technical workforce put boots on the Moon, tire tracks on Mars, and the first reusable spacecraft in orbit around the Earth. In Small Steps, Giant Leaps, learn what’s next as they build missions that redefine the future with amazing discoveries and remarkable innovations.
