S2E5 BTK Part 5 – The One Who Barely Got Away –

The Ghostbusters Task Force is Formed

On an unseasonably cool Saturday evening in April of 1979, death stalked 63-year-old Anna Williams and her 24-year-old granddaughter, Rebecca, in a small house next to a gulley at 615 South Pinecrest St. in Wichita, Kansas. Dennis Rader, also known as BTK, was excitedly hiding in her closet, waiting for Mrs. Williams to come home so that he could finally complete Project Pinecone, his codename for their brutal murders he had been anxiously planning for months. Unfortunately for Rader, fate would step in for both women in unbelievable ways, sparing their lives.

By July 1984, with no breaks in the case, investigators developed the BTK task force nicknamed the “Ghostbusters.” With seven years’ worth of DNA evidence, lists of males who lived within 1 ¼ mile of the victims, a list of white males attending Wichita State University between 1974 and 1979, the names of everyone who checked out the engineering book where the Otero letter was found and the addition of a computer consultant to the team, investigators were able to generate 225 possible suspects.

Was Dennis Rader on any of these lists or named as a potential suspect? Stay tuned as we find out just how close Anna Williams came to becoming BTK’s 8th victim and how close investigators really were to taking Dennis Rader off the streets.
