episode 1: First End of Year Tech & AI Wrap-up

Welcome to the Newblicious podcast! I’m your hostNewb, bringing you the latest must-know tech updates. Today we’re discussing overhyped quantum computing, Apple’s foray into open source AI, Nigeria lifting its crypto ban, online privacy victories, and decentralized social media updates.

First up, quantum computing is facing some reality checks when it comes to limitations and unmatched hype about its world-changing potential. MIT Technology Review assessed some of the challenges, like error rates and scalability issues, that still stand in the way of quantum delivering on promised revolutionizing of complex calculations. While powerful, quantum has physical constraints not as easily overcome as boosters claimed. We likely won’t see widescale quantum advantage for most real world problems anytime soon.

Meanwhile Apple made an unexpected entry into the open source AI space with its release of Ferret in October. The multimodal large language model blew past tech media scrutiny, but represents exciting transparency from the normally closed-off Apple. Allowing free access to train such AI could counterbalance dangers like fake news generation. Kudos to Apple on this open move!

In crypto adoption news, Nigeria finally lifted its controversial 2021 ban, allowing banks to integrate with crypto companies once again. The reversal signals the government’s recognition that blocking innovation was a mistake after immense backlash. Nigerian youth especially see immense potential in crypto and blockchain to power new economic opportunities.

Online rights advocacy group Electronic Frontier Foundation recapped major 2023 victories in fighting for privacy, including advances in encryption protections and reining in invasive government surveillance. But with bills like EARN IT threatening encryption backdoors, the battle continues. We applaud EFF’s critical oversight keeping authoritarian internet policies at bay.

And decentralized platform Bluesky now allows previewing content without an account, though posting still requires identity verification. The feature builds momentum as Bluesky positions itself as a transparent competitor to closed ecosystems like Twitter. Though still in beta, it offers an exciting glimpse into the future of social media.

That wraps up our tech roundup this week! Tune in next time for more of the top stories making waves. From all of us at New.blicio.us thanks for listening!
