Today Stauney introduces us to Artemisia Gentileschi, a baroque painter and a 17th-century feminist who surpassed gender norms to become known as a monumental female artist. She encountered a variety of obstacles, including a harrowing rape and consequent trial of her rapist that reached a level of notoriety for that time that has continued on today. We discuss the era she grew up in, her early talent and education, the rape and trial, her professional success, and her most notorious works of art and the context behind them.
TRIGGER WARNING: This episode does contain details of sexual assault including rape and details of some torture within the criminal justice system during a rape trial. (Skip to about 30:43 to our break if you want to avoid that part).
