Today is the first episode of What Class Are You.
Most people think of money when they hear the word "class" and how much or little of it they’ve got. And we really don’t like to talk about it. I think we’re getting better at talking about things like race and gender identity, but it’s rude to talk about money, or point out that some people have a lot more of it, others a lot less. But when you ask people ‘what class are you?’, they have a lot to say…about money, education, opportunity, power. And the question also leads to conversation about the terrible cultural divides in our country that are just getting wider.
So this series is an ongoing experiment. I make it as a periodic series for Vermont Public. And I’m going to run it here, every couple days for a few weeks.
We’re going to start the series with my old friend Susan Randall, the private investigator I interview a lot for Rumble Strip. She talks about what it was like to grow up upper-middle class.
