Mark Galeotti: IN MOSCOW'S SHADOWS

Cathrin Kahlweit im Gespräch mit Mark Galeotti

IN MOSCOW’S SHADOWS

With the opposition leader Alexei Navalny’s death in prison, it is easy to see little hope in and for Russia. Certainly, these are difficult times, with the war in Ukraine showing no signs of abating, growing dangers of conflict everywhere from the Middle East to cyberspace, and Putin’s Russia increasingly looking more like the Soviet Union of the 1970s. In these circumstances, it is all the more important to try and understand not just how we got here, but the potential pathways to a more productive future for both Russia and its relations with the rest of the world. Are there any signs of fractures in Putin’s regime? Is Russian society truly quiescent? What can the outside world do to help Russia evolve in a less confrontational way? Is there, in short, a chance for Russia to emerge from the shadows?

Mark Galeotti, born in 1965, is a British historian, expert on Russian security policy and a profound expert on the Putin era. He headed the Centre for European Security at the Institute for International Relations Prague and was previously Professor of International Relations at New York University. Also, Galeotti is hosting the popular podcast In Moscow’s Shadows where he talks about Putin’s Russia behind the headlines and has authored the bestseller A Short History of Russia (2022, Random House UK).
