In fact, CERN is an European research organization that operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world. It is a laboratory who's main job seems pretty legit. According to Wikipedia, "CERN's main function is to provide the particle accelerators and other infrastructure needed for high-energy physics research". It all sounds well and good -- but what if there's more going on than just research projects? With an international collaboration and hundreds of universities, scientists, researchers, and others of the intellectual elite, some suggest they're doing more than just zapping a few particles together.
