Cash for new grammar schools in £320m Budget plan
Extra money for new free schools and grammar schools in England will be announced by the Chancellor in his Budget on Wednesday. Philip Hammond will confirm a one-off payment of £320m for 140 new free schools, on top of the 500 already pledged to be created by 2020. Labour's Angela Rayner describes grammar schools as a "vanity project" but Toby Young, director of the New Schools Network, says more school places are urgently needed and free schools are the most cost effective way of delivering them.
