M17: Laurence Guy

Buy Laurence Guy ‘Les Mur/Sunlite’ on Monologues Records at http://bit.ly/m2beatport

Burgeoning UK talent Laurence Guy’s previous releases on labels such as Ben Pearce’s Purp & Soul and House Of Disco and edits via Let’s Play House have marked him out as one to watch, with a keen ear for melody and magpie-like use of soul, hip-hop and disco source material.

His new EP ‘Les Mur’ [including ‘Sunlite] out today on our new Monologues Records label and getting strong reactions from the likes of Sasse, Adam Port, Rancido and Jacques Renault, illustrating once again that he is very much one to watch this year. His Monologues mix blends the sounds of this EP with a slew of unreleased material in deep, warm, lush fashion.

*How would you describe your sound?*

I’m not entirely sure how to describe my sound, I guess I aim for it to be a mix of hip hop, house and soul, but it’s always changing!

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?*

I’m influenced by a huge range of different music, more specifically jazz, soul, hip-hop and obviously house music. I have a big soft spot for producers that get creative with samples. People like Pepe Bradock, Session Victim, J Dilla etc.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

The mix is basically made up of stuff made in 2014. It was quite nice to have a snapshot of the year music wise. I put everything onto CD and approached it like I would any other mix, recording into Logic and then editing/putting some interview snippets over the top to tie everything together.
