Lovely Maile Lei, Pua `Ahihi, & Moonlight Serenade

Lovely Maile Lei written by Maddie K. Lam in 1963 and originally performed by the Kahauanu Lake Trio. The Maile Lei is a fragrant vine with a dark-green leaf worn in long lengths around the neck and draping down to the waist. Pua `Ahihi lyrics by Mary Kawena Pukui and music by Maddie K. Lam, 1964. This song was written by Maddie Lam for Kahauanu Lake as a gift to his wife, famous hula instructor Maiki Aiu Lake. This mele compares his sweetheart to the `Ahihi blossom, a low-spreading shrub, part of the Lehua family. Moonlight Serenade composed by Glenn Miller with lyrics by Mitchell Parish released in 1939. Immediately a hit, this song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1991.
