Electricity prices on the up

British Gas will increase electricity prices by 12.5% from September, its owner Centrica has said, in a move that will affect 3.1 million customers. Centrica’s chief executive, Iain Conn, says after the increase British Gas will still be "significantly cheaper" than other energy companies. Shadow energy minister, Alan Whitehead, argues the government should issue a "price cap" on energy pricing. In response, our businesss correspondent, Simon Jack comments that a price cap may "stop innovation" which could ultimately cause inflation. (Image: Gas hob, credit: Getty Images)
