#12: Have it all and Enjoy Limitless Success in Every Area of your Life

Our Guest today David Morrison has a fascinating career journey to share with us.  He has gone from, quite literally a “rock and roll” lifestyle to life as a Social entrepreneur, living every day on purpose and loving his incredibly full life.  If you’re interested in how you can land some pretty sweet exciting roles, live the high life and also find meaning in your work we have so much in store for you today.  Dave used to think like the majority of us, "Just work hard, results get noticed, the next opportunity will show up", just like a lot of our parents, work hard for 40yrs with the 40 hr week and then retire, sounds good right?  Dave believes differently, as he took his first steps out into the world, these words are what he had in his mind as the keys to success. It certainly worked out, travelling with bands around the world like the Rolling Stones, Member of the 2000 Olympic Team (essentially party liaison) and even stood ring side with Ric Flair and the Rock at Wrestlmania.  He lived out a boyhood dream to work for the WWE during one of the most exciting times in their history. Whilst on paper very fulfilling as he got older, he reaslied he was just really working to get the "next big gig" and had ended up with a set of values that were putting me on a path of burn out and always feeling like there is something missing in my blessed life.

Welcome to our show today David Morrison.
David
Thank you, Kylie. It’s my absolute pleasure.
Kylie
Tell me about your career, if you could talk me through from the early days right up to today.
David
I tended to follow the ethos that when you work hard, opportunities will follow. People will notice you and want to connect with you. Like a lot of people, I started working in the hospitality industry.
Kylie
Starting out on hospitality is a great start – you are taught early on that when you’re at work, you need to work hard.
David
I completely agree. It’s not just about starting to learn responsibilities but also listening and connecting with people. You develop really good skills on just being observant and listening to what people’s needs are – it’s really an amazing ground work on building your skills to a professional in a workplace and being a well rounded person.
Kylie
You’re absolutely right, it’s a great foundation. I love a couple of things you said there. First, you work hard and opportunities come to you. Also, I like the way you look at your job at hospitality, about connecting with people and creating amazing experiences.
David
It sort of triggered a series of events where I was working in hospitality then all of a sudden I found myself working in musical theatre and theatre management and working on theatre production like Miss Saigon, Chicago and many others things like that for a number of years. After doing that for three to four years, I ended up working for the Australian Olympic team in 2000 Sydney Olympics. It was leaving the other job, I had a personal connection and I was looking into doing a business within the Australian Olympic committee. It’s more of about sports management, PR stuff. Then I ended up working in London for three years, after that I travelled around Europe and all around Asia doing TV events.
Kylie
Good to see you fulfilled your Australian duties and did sometime in London ;-). The other thing you’ve talked about is finding out what’s important to other people – I’m hearing a lot of what you can do for them, listening. It’s really good to hear that attitude of really caring and empathy, the listening and understanding.
David
The most enjoyable time I’ve had is less about me. In high pressure situations, you’d be able to help directly with a solution because you can’t solve everything but just being able to bring some calm and help get an outcome to really stressful places made that person feel bett...
