South Baton Rouge - Dr. Lori Latrice Martin and Paston Raymond A. Jetson
Presented by Dr. Lori Latrice Martin, associate professor of African American Studies at Louisiana State University and Pastor Raymond A. Jetson of Star Hill Church and CEO of MetroMorphosis. South Baton Rouge is an African American community in Baton Rouge. It served as one of the first places African Americans could receive a high school education in the state. The three mile area around historic McKinley High School was the site of the nation's first successful bus boycott. When laws restricted where African Americans could live, work, learn and play, South Baton Rouge was a refuge populated by African American restaurants, theaters, gas stations, and other businesses. The community was home to African American judges, lawyers, clergy, educators, and nurses who helped to sustain the community and other portions of the state through the end of legal segregation and beyond.
