The Personal Genome Project Canada's initial 56 participants: findings from whole genome sequencing

Genetic testing technology has advanced rapidly and it is becoming more affordable to perform whole genome sequencing. Whole genome sequencing can reveal heritable conditions and predispositions to disease. In this interview, Professor Steve Scherer discusses the findings from the initial cohort of 56 Canadian volunteers who had their whole genome sequenced for the Personal Genome Project Canada. The results, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, represent the culmination of 10 years of work by researchers. The project is ongoing.Prof. Scherer is the lead genome scientist at The Centre for Applied Genomics at the Hospital for Sick Children and the McLaughlin Centre at the University of Toronto. He is the lead author of the study.Full research article: www.cmaj.ca/lookup/doi/10.1503/cmaj.171151To request a transcript of this podcast, contact cmajgroup@cmaj.caSubscribe to CMAJ Podcasts on Apple Podcasts or your favourite podcast app. You can also follow us directly on our SoundCloud page or you can visit www.cmaj.ca/page/multimedia/podcasts.
