The Rebel Beat

The Rebel Beat is Firebrand Records podcast of radical political music across different genres, and across different continents, hosted and produced by Aaron Maiden on unceded Mohawk territory in Montreal. It is the mixtape to a riot against police brutality. It is your nightly newscast set to bass and beats. It is a rallying cry against apathy. It is protest anthems from Hong Kong to Istanbul to Ferguson to Montreal. The Rebel Beat drops once a month, and will feature interviews, collaborators, and accomplices. Get it through Firebrand Records’ Soundcloud page, and check out older episodes from Rebel Beat Radio here: http://www.rebelbeatradio.com.

Welcome back to another weekly edition of The Rebel Beat! Well, this week marks exactly 1 year that we’ve been producing this radio show at CKUT. So… happy fuckin’ birthday to us! Let’s give a HUGE shout-out to all the amazing bands, artists, and activists we’ve had on the show, as well as to our mothership, CKUT – truly the best community radio station on the planet.

Getting down to business, February is of course Black History Month. Here at the Rebel Beat, we recognize the complexity of this month, being only a month, and how reductive that can be. Yet at the same time, we think it’s an important opportunity to highlight some key ongoing and historical trends in Black community resistance and art.

So, in that spirit, our special guests on the show this week are Berekyah Yergeau and Tanguy Tijus, the co-founders of the Fro Foundation in Montreal. This year, like in the past several years, the Fro Foundation has put on an amazing festival for BHM, the Fro Fest. Fro Fest gives a platform for some of the top Black performers and speakers, both locally and internationally. This year, the headliner of the festival was the legendary Haitian-Quebecois hip-hop group Muzion. Anyways, Berekyah and Tanguy were in studio to break down the history and mandate of the Fro Foundation, their festival this year, and also offer their opinions on the recent blackface controversy in Quebec media.

Enjoy!
