The pool of London. All these ships. All this dirt and the humanity and the rats climbing all over it. Me and Elsa could walk the docks for hours just taking in the spectacle. All that is empire. Greed and lust and strength. Lust and greed and the strength it gives. All these colonial riches. And I am exactly where I want to be. London. Strong and rich and so full of this lust I’ve learnt of. All this power. All these bodies. All those ships and streets and ghosts that fade in and out of the other city. I see roman galleys on the river. Longships. The whole mystery is so obvious here.
We even dared to go to the Chinese quarters and tried their opium out. We rode the dragon while an English teen girl from the slums stood and watched us. The Chinese called her “the rat”. They said she could not dream so she enjoyed watching others dream.
