21st century music has broken away from the cage imposed by the 100 years old tradition of “experimental”, “contemporary”, “new music” and/or “avant-garde”. Starting in the 80’s, some composers, many of them from Latin America, started bringing together different traditions, including the one of classical Western music with the music of the 20th century. The result is what Fiesta’s host, Elbio Barilari, likes to call New New Music: music that is new and feels free to embrace musicality and beauty without complexes. “For this program”- Elbio says- “I have choosen to present two other Uruguayan composers from my generation alongside my orchestral work “Ofrendas” (Offerings), commissioned by the Chicago Sinfonietta”.
