Star Trek (2009), Part I: Super Duper Innovative

Marking the 10th Anniversary.

On May 8, 2009, Star Trek returned to the big screen with a reboot from director J.J. Abrams entitled simply Star Trek. It was a bold new take on the decades-old material, with a new cast playing the iconic roles of beloved characters from The Original Series. Plus, Abrams had a budget unlike anything we had seen before. It was all designed to bring Star Trek into the mainstream. Looking back 10 years later, did it succeed? Did it alienate existing fans in the process?

In this special podcast—the first of two parts—hosts Amy Nelson and Mike Schindler revisit J.J. Abrams’s Star Trek on the 10th anniversary of its premiere. We discuss the lead-up to the film, our experiences watching it for the first time, and our thoughts on the reboot … then and now.

Plus, check back soon for the second part of this retrospective, where we will hear recollections from other hosts on the network.
