The NYPD and Social Distancing

An NYPD officer was put on modified duty after a violent social distancing violation arrest was filmed. Donovan Richards, Council member for the 31st District of the New York City Council and Chair of the Committee on Public Safety, talks about the NYPD's role in enforcing pubic health measures, and concerns around over policing and use of force.

Just tuned into @BrianLehrer& hearing @DRichards13 spitting fire:

"We can't police our way out of this pandemic".. he goes on to say NYPD should not be in charge of social distancing & breaks down structural racism that continues to impact communities of color incl in #COVID19.

@BrianLehrer This is a feature not a bug. Officers were handing out masks and glove care packages at Grand Army Plaza. We need to stop dancing around the issue. New Jim Crow https://t.co/Cq83OMiSmU

Nonsense! The NYPD should be enforcing masks and they are not doing it. They should work smarter, not less. In parks they only pick on soccer players. Get rid of abusive cops. But in this case, disparate treatment of poor and people of color may just save their lives.
