Ian Buruma, frequent contributor to The New York Review of Books, Bard professor and the author of Their Promised Land: My Grandparents in Love and War (Penguin Press, 2016), talks about the unusual character of Brussels, capital of Belgium and the European Union, as well as a hub of ISIS terrorists.
Buruma said Brussels is being unfairly characterized as a dangerous place. It's not dangerous, but it is "a political mess of nineteen different municipal districts," which adds to its complicated character.
