A Desi Woman Podcast is joined by Dr. Meera Shah, a family medicine physician and chief medical officer of New York’s Planned Parenthood Hudson Peconic. Dr. Shah is the author of a new book, "You’re The Only One I’ve Told: The Stories Behind Abortion". For years, she herself often hesitated to disclose the details of her work as an abortion provider for fear of how she might be perceived. When she began to open up to women, she was amazed at the personal narratives and experiences which would pour forth from friends, acquaintances and even strangers. Dr. Shah places names and human stories to abortion so that it can be seen as essential medical care instead of being a vitriol filled political debate. We discuss how =race, religion, culture, gender identity, class, marital status, and many other factors directly influence every individual’s decision to have an abortion, all of which Shah acknowledges head-on in her new book.
