The Rebel Beat

The Rebel Beat is Firebrand Records podcast of radical political music across different genres, and across different continents, hosted and produced by Aaron Maiden on unceded Mohawk territory in Montreal. It is the mixtape to a riot against police brutality. It is your nightly newscast set to bass and beats. It is a rallying cry against apathy. It is protest anthems from Hong Kong to Istanbul to Ferguson to Montreal. The Rebel Beat drops once a month, and will feature interviews, collaborators, and accomplices. Get it through Firebrand Records’ Soundcloud page, and check out older episodes from Rebel Beat Radio here: http://www.rebelbeatradio.com.

Welcome back to the latest edition of The Rebel Beat!

Our very special guest on the show this week is Marianna Szczygielska, aka DJ Cyborg Monkey! Marianna is a queer-feminist DJ, originally from Poland, and now based out of Budapest, Hungary.

DJ Cyborg Monkey is a mainstay on the radical queer music scene in Budapest, and a member of the feminist space Klit. Her DJ sets strive to highlight

the best in women and trans music from Eastern Europe, and get people moving on the dance floor. She’s been involved in a bunch of amazing queer and feminist activist initiatives over the years, as well as an upcoming feminist DJ camp in Budapest this summer.

Marianna put together an amazing mix for The Rebel Beat, called “Kvir Cold Wave” (that’s “queer” cold wave in Eastern European style), which we’re very happy to share with you tonight. It features some amazing new wave, punk, and dark synth sounds. I also caught up with Marianna over Skype from her temporary home in Sweden to talk about her music and her organizing work!

Plus we read a short obituary for the legendary Ethiopian saxophonist Getachew Mekuria, bumped a few more tunes from the amazing Black Lives Matter-Toronto mixtape, and finished with the latest from M.I.A.

Enjoy!
