Quadriga: War on terror - How to combat IS?

War on terror - How to combat IS? French President Francois Hollande is on a diplomatic mission: to the UK, US and Russia—seeking allies in a war against Islamic State. More air strikes than ever are being carried out against the IS but few believe that will be enough to defeat the jihadis. More and more are calling for Western ground troops to strike against the terrorists. The mission would be dangerous and difficult and there is no guarantee it would succeed. How can IS be defeated? Join the conversation: quadriga(at)dw.com Our guests: Ulrike Herrmann is an author and a journalist with the Berlin-based daily the Tageszeitung, or TAZ. She says, “To fight a war, you need money. And that’s why we need to cut off the cash flow to Islamic State.” Alan Posener is a commentator for the daily newspaper “Die Welt”. He’s convinced: that “Destroying IS is easy and necessary. The hard part comes later: building a new Syria.” Daniel Gerlach is the founder and editor of “Zenith”, a German magazine focusing on politics, economics and culture in the Middle East. He believes: “If the West doesn’t come up with an honest plan for the future of the territory held by IS, nobody can expect to find allies on the ground.”
