Quadriga: Refugee crisis - New walls for Europe?

The cold and the rain can’t hold them back. They’re still heading to Europe in their thousands - refugees from war and persecution. But Europe is beginning to close its borders. And the situation for the men, woman and children stranded in the Balkans is catastrophic. At a crisis meeting in Brussels, 13 EU states agreed on measures to try and return some order to the chaos. Patrols will be stepped up along the EU’s borders. Refugees will be registered in the country of arrival. And deportation procedures accelerated. The question is: will the next step for Europe be to build new walls to keep the refugees out? Our guests: Judy Dempsey has been a columnist for the International Herald Tribune and works now as a Senior Associate at Carnegie Europe and editor-in-chief of Strategic Europe. She says: “The Walls are already being built: both physical and mental ones.” Alan Posener German-British author and commentator for the daily newspaper Die Welt. He says: “If we want to keep the free movement of people within Europe, we have to keep those we don't want out of Europe. There is either new walls for Europe or new walls in Europe.“ Janosch Delcker is a political correspondent for Politico Europe, based in Berlin. He says: "Building walls won't help. Europe needs to become better in addressing the reasons that make refugees leave their home countries in the first place." Have your say: quadriga[at]dw.com
