Quadriga: Refugee crisis - Germany overstreched?

The numbers continue to climb dramatically. First we heard that Germany would be taking in 400.000 refugees this year. Then that figure spiraled to 800,000. Now it's way over a million - and still rising. More and more people are calling for action to be taken to stem the influx of migrants. And worryingly for Angela Merkel, those calls are increasingly coming from within her own party ranks. But the chancellor continues to insist: "Germany can cope!" Many ordinary Germans, though, are asking themselves: "Can we really make this work? Will there be enough jobs and apartments to go round?" The far-right, it seems, is profiting from those concerns. So, has Germany reached a breaking point? 1.5 million refugees - Merkel isolated, Germany at breaking point? Have your say: quadriga[at]dw.com Our guests: Alan Posener - is an Anglo-German author and regular commentator for the Berlin based newspaper “Die Welt”. He says: "Merkel is alone because she acted rashly. Germany can absorb more refugees, but it may be getting fed up with Merkel." Christoph von Marschall - is the senior diplomatic correspondent for another Berlin daily, the “Tagesspiegel”. He believes: "Germany is facing a cruel reality check. It’s got to learn to do pragmatic but unpopular things like sending rejected asylum seekers back to where they came from.” Abdulaziz Ramadan - is a journalist and activist from Damascus, now living in Leipzig. He was a student of English at home in Syria when the civil war broke out four and a half years ago. He was forced to break off his studies and arrested several times. Abdulaziz says: “Over a million apartments and houses are standing empty across Germany. The municipalities have received enough money to respond to the crisis. So, the means to help people are in place.”
