Football Language Podcast Euro 2020: Send a team home
DF: Hello everyone, this is Damian from the Learning English Through Football team – I hope you are all doing well. As you know, we are posting a football expression from the Euro 2020 tournament every day, Damon looked at words and phrases connected to ‘woodwork’ in yesterday’s podcast and today I am looking at a phrase that is used when a team is knocked out of a tournament: To send a team home.

So, in the Group A game between Switzerland and Turkey both sides knew that a win was necessary to maintain their hopes of qualifying for the last 16. Turkey had been many people’s dark horses but after yesterday’s 3-1 defeat they return home without any points at all. There are many ways to describe when a team does not qualify for the knock-out stages of a competition such as eliminate or knock out. Sometimes if a fancied side (that’s a team that many expect to win) is defeated by a weaker or lower ranked team we might hear the phrase ‘dumped out of the competition‘ though this is usually used in knock-out football rather than in tournaments. In the Group A match yesterday both teams knew that if they lost they’d be out of the Euros and would have to go home. So when Switzerland easily defeated Turkey 3-1 we can say they sent Turkey home – the Turkish team were sent home by the Swiss. I wonder whether Ukraine will send Austria home in today’s games?
