As a songwriter, you have to be a student of your genre. Whether it be Rock, Pop, Hip Hop, or Country. You have to learn to keep your eyes on your own paper as you create this body of work, and be fearless in doing so. At the same time, there are so many questions when it comes to not only writing songs, but what to do with your creation afterwards. It’s what goes into the song that makes it successful. Imagine building a home. You wouldn’t live in that place with nothing in it to make it feel like home. It's the furniture that makes the place feel warm and cozy. The same goes for a song. So where does one start?
Questions arise such as what is a song plugger? What do they do? Do you know that there are two parts to the publishing deal? Are you better as an independent songwriter signed to a small, boutique publishing deal, or does getting signed to a major publishing house make more sense? Can you be the songwriter, AND be the publisher at the same time? And how does one go about getting their foot in the doors when it comes to getting your songs heard? Are you actually ready?
Nancy Deckant who is the CEO of Discover Sooner, answers these questions…. and more!
