episode 1: Episode 1 - What's So Subversive About The Hebrew Bible?

In this inaugural episode of The Subversive Scribe podcast, show host Jesse “Hesh” Heshel discusses the makeup of the Hebrew canon – also called the Tanakh which is often called the Torah, Prophets and Writing. Tanakh is an acronym for Torah, Naavim, Ketuvim in Hebrew

The Hebrew Bible – called the “Old Testament” by Christians – IS the Bible of the New Testament. It IS the only Bible that Jesus or his disciples ever knew. The Tanakh is God’s planter box: Torah, Prophets, Writings and each must comport, or at least can’t contradict. This is a problem for the New Testament, Islam and other religions

The Hebrew Bible starts with Instruction but ends in Wisdom. We are planets apart socially, culturally, in every way, not just millennia – so some parts simply will not transplant to us directly. But if you don’t know Tanakh – in all its horror and gore – then how can you even began to understand Christianity, Islam or the important influence of the Bible, particularly the Hebrew Bible, in the West?

The Hebrew Bible that we are so used to is in reality very subversive even after all this time. We let it speak and then decide how to act. Deuteronomy 30:15 puts it this way: “I set before you life and death. Choose life”. The choice is ours. Hate it, love it, embrace it, despise it – choose. We choose our fate. When it says what contradicts our cherished religions, cherished ideologies, or cherished practices…that is how it is subversive. It undermines our assumptions, inferences and way of being if we let it. And then we get to decide.

Lastly, we discuss the purpose of The Subversive Scribe and giving you the tools to understand your chains, escape them and to subvert the lies on the lips of the priests. To understand the text in its context and see through the stories of the storytellers meant to weave you into their way of thinking about the world. Until next time, my name is Hesh and I am your subversive scribe telling you to stay subversive.
