In this second episode of The Subversive Scribe podcast, show host Jesse “Hesh” Heshel discusses hermeneutics which is the art and science of interpretation. One of the main maxims of a solid hermeneutical foundation is the simple and sensible notion that however one interprets…it cannot mean to us what it did not mean to the original recipients and audience. This can be done if we follow a sound hermeneutical approach.

We also discuss five “rules” that will guide anyone in interpreting, though there are many more. Hermeneutics is so important to understand and practice because it will keep us away from false theological conclusions and keep us within the boundaries of the sacred text itself. What we believe has consequences because what we believe leads to actions that we take.

If one does not take care to interpret correctly one can end in a very dangerous place intellectually, socially and spiritually. If you don’t built it right from the start, you can get off track very, very quickly and end up with something that looks vastly different from where the text started.
