In this seventh episode of The Subversive Scribe podcast, show host Jesse “Hesh” Heshel discusses the difference between studying the Bible and Biblical Studies, the academic discipline.
Studying the bible is not the same as Biblical Studies though the bible is certainly the object of study in both. Biblical Studies is usually a field associated with private academic study such as a Jewish or Christian university. It is the academic approach to the Bible. We discuss several areas of academic study and that the field requires discipline, rigor and hard work to grasp effectively.
We discuss job prospects and methods and also look at examples of “biblical studies” in the Bible where various books make reference to earlier books and texts.
We discuss some academic programs and academic areas of study including Textual Criticism; Source; Form/Tradition History; Redaction; Canonical; Rhetorical; Narrative; Psychological; Social-Scientific; Post-Modern; Feminist; Masculinist; Post-Colonial, Liberationist; and many more.
Lastly, we close with a personal experience of Biblical Studies and how that resulted in The Subversive Scribe podcast.
