episode 5: Episode 5 - Can We Know Truth? And It's Not A Person
In this fifth episode of The Subversive Scribe podcast, show host Jesse “Hesh” Heshel discusses how we can know if something is true and if truth itself is knowable (it is). Truth is knowable – to say “we can’t know anything with certainty” is on its face contradictory. The sacred text – the Tanakh – is largely simple, clear and precise – the problem is we just don’t like it.
We also discuss knowledge verification, falsifiability and other common religious axioms used to describe ways of gaining knowledge which is used to ascertain and verify truthfulness. We also discuss the notion that “truth” is a person when in fact truth is a concept by which something is factually correct.
Lastly, we discuss some problems with interpreting/hermeneutics that requires religious belief first. Truth of the text isn’t determined by the ethical or moral quality of the interpreter or by how “baptized in the Spirit” one is or if one is even a believer or “born again” or even if they’re in the “right” religion or sect of religion. Something is true on its own and a reasonable person would be able to understand the text as presented REGARDLESS of how religious one is or isn’t.
