In this fourth episode of The Subversive Scribe podcast, show host Jesse “Hesh” Heshel discusses the primary and straight forward interpretive method of interpreting the text of scripture (or any text for that matter). This episode focuses on the “P” in PRDS – the Jewish method of interpretation discussed in the last episode.
This whole episode is based on the point that the way to be biblical is to take the Peshat route of interpretation – it is letting the text speak for itself. The plain sense, straight forward meaning of the text – in context – is what it means.
We also discuss the Karaite tradition within Judaism, a sect of Judaism that largely focuses on the Peshat level of interpretation; the straight forward plain sense meaning of the text in context as THE meaning of the text.
Peshat is the biblical way of interpreting; passage means what it means – the plain sense reading, the straight forward understanding, the base meaning is what it means. Then let the passage say what it says, in its own grammar, language, idioms, idiolect, context, history, and politics and let it mean what it means.
