DJ Brian Norwood was born during the first seedlings of dance music as we know it today were sprouting. In the 1970s, the Tea Dance at Fire Island's Blue Whale was settling in as ritual and David Mancuso's infamous "The Loft" parties in NYC were just getting started. Being born in the music-rich environment of Nashville would be a harbinger of things to come. And being born in that era would greatly impact his career.In the 90's, Philadelphia, the city of brotherly love, would open its arms to Brian. This move to a more urban environment and being within the twinkle of NYC skyscrapers, is an important transition not only in geography, but of musical awakening. After attending a seminal Saint-At-Large Party with all its intendant revelry, he felt an overwhelming drive to cultivate music and learn to mix. Vinyl was still the preferred medium for DJ's, which gives Brian the unique perspective of being among the younger DJ's still spinning today who teethed on vinyl.In the 90s Brian began to play live shows. His ability to feel the energy of a room and to zero in on what crowds want to hear quickly gained him major name recognition that spread from Philadelphia to the entire nation...

episode 39: Sophisticated Morning 86
Hello my fellow music-lover. Good to be back with you again after a too-long absence. Life has had too much on my plate and I've not had lots of extra time to create a set...until now. Just in time, right? Spring is in the air. The sun is out. The air is warm. The birds are chirping. And here's new music to match the season. I'm always excited about releasing a new music project. But I'm particularly excited about this set. Maybe it's because it's been a few months since I've created a set. I do have a good story to accompany the mix. I was actually going to release this a week ago -- but I was having reservations about a couple of the songs on the mix. First, I wasn't really *feeling* the opening song and I'm a huge believer that the opening song is possibly the most important song of the mix (if there is one?) as it sets the stage for what's to come. Just as I know from the first note if I like a song or not...I believe that YOU should know from the first note of my set whether you are going to like the journey (or not). There was also another song or two later in the mix that didn't quite gel with the rest of them. So....I held off and didn't push the mix out. Fast forward to yesterday morning and I was on a call with my friend Michael Rackley and...as we always do...we started talking about music. We're DJs. What else are we supposed to talk about? ;-) He asked me if I had heard the new Galantis acoustic mix of Becky Hill's "Run". I hadn't! He the asked if I had heard Gryffin's new collaboration with OneRepublic "You Were Loved". I hadn't heard that either. Well, there you go. There's your first two songs on the set. Thank you Michael for solving the problem of what to open my set with. It's a big and powerful heart-tugging acoustic anthem and I hope that you love it as much as I (WE) do. From there I weave my way through my signature deep house soothers that segue into uplifting vocal anthems that again segue into driving spine-chilling instrumental masterpieces. They segues are subtle; you will hardly notice as I push the energy and intensity higher. If you're a Flagger...your Flags are going to end up in whipped excitement. If you're a Dancer....your hands will reach for the sky. Eyes closed. Hands high. As always this music project is an act of LOVE. Every note, tone and word you hear is rooted in Love. From my heart...to your ears...ENJOY. PS: One of you turned me on to the third song "Starlit Afternoon" by Craig Strickland and I can't remember which one of you did.
