episode 132: Dava Savel Helped Change The World


Dive into the story behind the most important TV episode in the history of Television. Dava Savel won an Emmy for writing Ellen's coming-out episode, "The Puppy Episode" on Ellen.

In 1997 Ellen DeGeneres did more to influence Americans' attitudes about gay rights than any other celebrity or public figure ever.* This was accomplished through 'The Puppy Episode' the episode of The Ellen Show where Ellen came out as a lesbian to the world. Dava Savel helped write that episode, craft the season that ran up to that episode, won an Emmy, and changed the world. 

Dava Savel shares a lot of what led up to "The Puppy Episode" and the aftermath of the episode.

Dava was also one of the first network writers to be hired by Disney. Dava worked on That's So Raven and Sunny with a Chance,

We also discuss how Dava became a writer in Hollywood, working on Dinosaurs, Will & Grace, and The Tony Danza Show. Dava also shares an amazing story about Tom Arnold waging war on the Seinfeld gang.
