This episode of the podcast is with proud Birr-native, Connacht loosehead prop & member of the prestigious 100 cap club at Leinster Rugby, Peter Dooley.
This one was a little surreal to record, as Peter and myself are very close in age and would've grown up together out at Roscrea rugby club. We would've spent may days playing against each other for many years in both rugby & hurling, representing Birr and Roscrea respectively, so there was a good deal of banter in this conversation.
We touched on Offaly vs Tipperary in the minor hurling final last weekend, chatting about what an important part of his life hurling was in his youth. We also touched on his underage rugby experiences, which included his transition to the front-row from number 8.
We talked about his excitement about his big move to Galway next week, after signing on to play with Connacht next season. We also touched on his reasons for staying in Ireland and his international aspirations.
Finally we spoke about the heavy influence his dad, Gerry, has had over his rugby career and over the development of the underage setup at Birr RFC.
Pete, has left a legacy at Leinster rugby, achieving his 100th cap last season, so we spoke about the many experiences he's had there, and how pivotal the club has been in his development as a rugby player and as a man.
