episode 81: Pornography mythology

"Myth #4: Porn is only for ABLE-BODIED, young, straight men

Continuing along the lines of diversity, we had to mention disability and this IS an area where the industry still needs to do some work.

FACT: Yes, the adult movie business seriously under-represents the disabled community yet there ARE performers who are changing this.

Andrew Gurza, for example, has Spastic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy and uses a power wheelchair but has starred in a couple of gay pornos.

And there are others too, Lyric Seal (another wheelchair user) works with queer porn companies to produce disabled content.

And let’s not forget Long Jeanne Silver, the legendary amputee porn star of the 70s.

Often fetishized, it would be nice to start seeing some more normalized pornos featuring a wider range of disabilities.

Myth #5: Porn = Sex education

One of the most common complaints about porn is that it can give sex a bad rep.

Parents bemoan the fact that their teenagers can get access to porn and that this gives them unrealistic expectations of what sex is all about.

And whilst we can whole heartedly agree that this can indeed be true, there are two major points here that are being missed.

  1. Porn CAN be educational
  2. On the whole, porn isn’t MEANT to be educational.

FACT: Firstly, if you’re anything like us here at the Red Light Network then you’ll know that sex education at school is pretty rubbish and falls way short or what we actually needed and wanted to know.

Porn, whether that was a blue movie or a top shelf magazine, filled in some of those gaps. And I think we all knew where the blurred lines of reality vs fantasy lay.

Secondly, most porn isn’t intended for a curious teenage audience so the argument that it isn’t educational is a bit like complaining that the Fast & Furious franchise doesn’t do a good job at promoting driver education!!

Myths About Sex in Porn

Porn can often make sex look pretty easy but as most of us know, the reality can often be far more awkward.

But PORN doesn’t have to represent reality, it’s meant to arouse so just as we wouldn’t expect a Hollywood movie to depict the banality of real life, we want our adult films to show us the action WITHOUT the dull stuff, right?

So, we wanted to look at some more myths about what goes on in porn and how this compares to reality.

Myth #7: Women who call for a repairman REALLY only want sex

Our first Sex in Porn myth is a classic plot scenario that has been used in adult movies since (at least) the 1980s.

Porn has long perpetuated the myth that women who need a helping hand are always in the market for something ‘extra’!

This includes plumbers, copier guys, gardeners and delivery drivers.

Consider this porn stereotype to be a complete myth.

Fact: When a client calls for professional help, 99.99% of the time, the only tool they want to see is the one you use to fix the problem with!"
