episode 58: Outright Optimism

[transcript]

Outright Optimism

Lisa is a public speaking coach and trainer on a mission to help purpose-driven business and nonprofit leaders build visibility, credibility, and awareness for their work through engaging presentations, a mindset of service, and speaking up for change.

As a speaking coach, she has learned over the years how many people are hiding themselves, afraid to speak up and stand out because they don\'t fit into typical cultural or gender norms. Diversity in the professional world has become an important issue to me from the perspective of helping individuals bring their whole selves to their presentations.

Lisa’s core message is that business professionals who use speaking as a tool to grow their visibility, credibility and influence should be focusing on audience engagement, ditching perfection, and creating connections. And creating connection comes from a place of authentically showing our whole selves as presenters and communicators.

Lisa loves to get the message out about the #ThisIsWhatProfessionalLooksLike campaign and both invite people to share their own stories of triumphantly bringing their whole selves to the workplace and inspire those who are still afraid to speak up and stand out. She’s the author of “Presenting for Humans: Insights for Speakers on Ditching Perfection and Creating Connection.” Before launching her company in 2005, she spent sixteen years as an advocate and educator in the nonprofit sector, as well as founding her own nonprofit organization. This background, together with her bachelor’s degree in theatre and master’s in education, have influenced her upbeat and accessible approach to public speaking.

Lisa models authentic, aligned, collaborative and fun presentations using relevant, practical, and useful content that moves the audience into action. Her vision for the future is one of “outright optimism”. She just sees a world where humans are valued for who they are and seen as contributing members of society no matter their age, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, body shape or size, appearance, or anything else that currently feeds all kinds of discrimination and oppression.

When I asked Lisa to describe her superpower, she said that it is to be able to make mistakes and mess up in her presentations and recover like a pro. LOL. She has quite literally had people come up to her and say, “Seeing how you handled that makes me believe that I can do it, too!” – Her other superpower: Endless positivity and optimism.”
