Verify Podcast

Verify Podcast places popular Christian beliefs and teachings, under the lens of the bible. It is anchored on the behaviour of the Berean Jews, whose insistence on confirming the words they heard, led to the salvation of many (Acts 17:11-12). The podcast also helps you learn what makes Christianity stand out among other world views, so that you can give answers to the reason for your hope (1 Peter 3:15).

episode 3: 3. THEY SAID IT WAS MY FAULT

I got married in the year 2009 and I didn’t give birth to a child for almost 10 years. In Nigeria where I come from, this is quite a big deal and so with time, I heard several insinuations from people, that it was somehow the fault and sins of my husband and I that had caused our condition. I encountered the notion that anyone going through a tough time doesn’t have enough faith, hasn’t prayed enough or isn’t as spiritual as those who have had it easier.

During an extended period of ill health after finally giving birth to our baby in 2019, I again heard the insinuation that I must have wronged someone and must find the person and ask for forgiveness before I could get well.

These were trying moments for me that led to many secret tears, and as I struggled with all that people had said to me, I found the scripture in Luke 1:6-7, which tells of Zechariah and Elizabeth who were blameless, yet childless for many years. This and other examples, made me realise that even though our mistakes sometimes get us into trouble, trials are not always an indication of sin! God’s people also go through trials!

According to John 16:33 and Mark 10:29- 30, trials will come, even to those of us who take a stand for Christ.

The great news though, is that no trial can separate us from God’s love (Rom 8:37), and He is mighty to save, and with us, always.

My prayer today is that God should fill his church with the spirit of true compassion so that every air of superiority is put aside and we do not tear down the weak and wounded, with our words. May strength, help and deliverance, come speedily to all who are suffering, Amen.
