1 John 3:9 - No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God.
“This is a very startling statement, particularly in some of the older translations which translate John’s words, ‘No-one born of God commits sin’. (RSV)”
Dr. Ferguson brings out 2 points:
1.By the new birth a radical break with sin takes place.
2.The status of sin has been dramatically changed. What are your thoughts on his points?
J.C. Ryle from his book, Holiness:
“When people talk of having received “such a blessing,” and of having found “the higher life,” after hearing some earnest advocate of “holiness by faith and self-consecration,” while their families and friends see no improvement and no increased sanctity in their daily tempers and behaviour, immense harm is done to the cause of Christ.
True holiness, we surely ought to remember, does not consist merely of inward sensations and impressions. It is much more than tears, and sighs, and bodily excitement, and a quickened pulse, and a passionate feeling of attachment to our own favourite preachers and our own religious party, and a readiness to quarrel with everyone who does not agree with us. It is something of “the image of Christ,” which can be seen and observed by others in our private life, and habits, and character, and doings.”
Romans 8:29 - For those whom He foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, in order that He might be the firstborn among many brothers.
“The thought may be present in your mind, ‘Surely the emphasis of the NT is on the importance of a prolonged struggle with sin in the Christian’s life?’” How can we reconcile these two lines of thought?
A question about sanctification:
In the Bible Christians are called saints, which suggest a present state of holiness.
In 1 Corinthians 6:11 it says - And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
Is sanctification past, present, or future?
