episode 71: Sin’s Dominion Ended PART 2 of 2 - Chapter 13 - The Christian Life by Sinclair B. Ferguson

with Pastor William Shifflett. FREE PAPERBACK BOOK OFFER: https://williams-good-word.org/free/

Dying to Sin.

Romans 5:20 - “ but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more”

Romans 6:1-2 - What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?

I have heard Christians make statements like, “We are not under law, but under grace, so I can sin all I want to.” Do you think that this attitude is prevalent in some Christian circles?

Paul’s argument.

1. Our death to sin is accomplished through union with Christ.

Romans 6:3-5 - Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? 4 We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with Him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with Him in a resurrection like His.

How are Christians baptized into Christ Jesus’ death?

Point 1 in the argument is: Those who have died and been raised cannot consistently live in sin.

Romans 6:4 - We were buried therefore with Him by baptism into death.

What has been buried?

2. Our union with Christ involves the death of ‘the old man’.

Romans 6:6-7 - We know that our old self was crucified with Him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin.

Do Christians have a new life?

Point 2 in the argument is: If we are freed from sin we cannot go on living as though we were still under its dominion.

Back to Romans 6:6-7 - We know that our old self was crucified with Him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin.  Is our old self and the body of sin one in the same?

It says “in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing”. Does that mean sin is destroyed?

What does it mean to our Christian life that the old man is crucified and the body of sin is brought to nothing?

3. Our union with Christ leads to new life in Him.

Romans 6:8-10 - Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over Him. 10 For the death He died He died to sin, once for all, but the life He lives He lives to God.

Point 3 in the argument therefore is: By our very nature as Christians we are living new lives to the glory of God.

Practical implications.

Sin does not have dominion over us.

Dead men brought to life.

Ugly ducking, beautiful swan.

God has done for us what we can never do for ourselves.

For we have died to sin, sin has not died in us.

We must now examine this new conflict more closely.
