episode 85: Personal Identity & US Collegiate Athletics with Colm Bourke - Petey Performance Podcast #85

This episode of the podcast is with Irish international athlete, and now horizontal-jumps coach at a collegiate-level, Colm Bourke.

Colm also hosts his own podcast, the Track and Field Performance Podcast. This led us to the conversation about the experience of podcasting and the benefits of it, as well as the aspects of self development and self-discovery that comes from that process.

Colm spent a portion of his collegiate career working in the US with the University of Louisiana Monroe. We discussed the lack of the club system in the US and the differences in training and competing in the States vs Ireland.

Colm opened up about the struggles of being isolated alone in a foreign country. He shared how he tackled those hurdles and pushed himself to perform at the highest level possible during his time in America.

We discussed the importance of having different interests outside of sport, which make up an important part of your personal identity, to take pressure off your athletic endeavours. We spoke in detail about sports psychology and it’s importance in athletic pursuits, why it’s commonly neglected, but why that’s now changing.

We touched on Colm’s return to Dublin and his current roles in DCU and NCI.

Colm also gave some incredibly invaluable advice to any athletes considering moving to the states to pursue their athletic career. If you are an athlete that is debating whether the US is the place for you to train and compete, then this is a must listen episode.

You can find out more about Colm's podcast over at The Track and Field Performance Podcast on Apple Podcasts.
