“The Christian life is not all smiles; but neither is it all tears. It is not all peace, but neither is it only unabated defeat.”

We live at at unique period of human history, between the first coming of Christ and the return of Christ. Why is this significant?

We remember the old hymn that goes,

Just as I am, though tossed about, With many a conflict, many a doubt

Fighting and fears within without, Oh, Lamb of God, I come, I come

It comes from 2 Corinthians 7:5 - For even when we came into Macedonia, our bodies had no rest, but we were afflicted at every turn—fighting without and fear within.

It says we were afflicted at every turn, the Christian life is not all smiles, is it?

What is the conflict that is ‘without’ and what is the conflict ‘within’?

(The conflict ‘without’ is with the world and the devil; the conflict within is with the flesh.)

1 John 2:15-16 - Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.

What are ‘the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life’?

Conflict with the world.

Paul greeted Christians in the NT as “those who are in: Ephesus; Corinth; Philippi.

We know that all of those Christians had conflicts, just as we do now.

Christians are in Christ, but we are also in the world. How do we deal the two?

Jesus prayed, in John 17:15-17: I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.

It is God’s will that we are here, are we here for a purpose?

What is that purpose?
