Dark Content

Projection, Whitechapel Gallery, London This Week: Artists Franco and Eva Mattes discuss their latest project, Dark Content. The project explores the world of content moderators, the invisible work force of actual human beings responsible for keeping graphic, offensive, and violent videos and images out of social media and search results. Google, Facebook, Twitter --- really almost any social platform you can think of ----  employs moderators, yet the work they do, and the workers themselves, are totally invisible to the general public. For Dark Content Franco and Eva conducted a series of anonymous interviews with moderators and turned their words into animated short videos. These videos are only visible on the Dark Net, a part of the Internet that allows for total anonymity and must be accessed through a special browser called Tor.
