PART ONE of 4 - Crucifying Sin - Chapter 15 - The Christian Life by Sinclair B. Ferguson with Pastor William Shifflett. Visit Pastor William's Good News Blog: https://williams-good-word.org/
“In Chapter 14 we spoke about the Christian’s conflicts and for the most part concentrated on the conflicts “without”. In this chapter we will concentrate on the conflicts “within”.
John 14:30 - I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on Me, But, sadly, that is not true of us.
“There is still, in the Christian, a base of operations from which Satan is able to work, a ‘Quisling’ or ‘traitor’ of the heart.”
Pastor, the Bible teaches that Christians have died to sin, but has sin died in the Christian?
(Sin no longer reigns and we are not longer its slaves.)
1 John 3:9 - No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God.
KJV - “doth not commit sin” NASB - “practices sin” Mounce Reverse Interlinear New Testament - “makes a practice of” GREEK WORD - “to make, effect, bring to pass, cause to take place”
The conflict within, do we fight this battle from the perspective of defeat or victory?
Galatians 5:19-21 - Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Strong verses. Does “flesh” mean our body?
When we take these verses in context with the rest of scripture, what does it tell us about someone that calls themselves Christian and continues in sin?
What should a young Christian that is struggling with sin do? What is the church’s responsibility?
