Once, I overheard someone in a casual discussion with other younger Christians, joke that since she was born, she had been hearing that Christ was coming back soon, but yet, He (Christ) had still not shown up. In a few words, amidst laughter, she let her audience know that she believed the second coming of Christ was some kind of fable which would most likely never happen. This woman is a very active leader in one of the biggest churches in the city where I live, yet here she was, openly ridiculing one of the fundamental doctrines of the Christian faith; the second coming of Jesus.

I had forgotten about this incident, till I stumbled on 2Peter 3, from verse 3, where Apostle Peter narrates this exact scenario, talking about people in the last days, who will mock the promise of Christ’s return. Please take a few minutes to read it yourself.

To be honest, I too have had my fair share of questions in my walk with God. I have asked many hard questions. I mean of all the religions of the world, Why Jesus? Why Christianity? Like the woman I narrated about, you too may be asking “Why should I believe that Christ will come back again someday? Why should I even believe in Him? Tough questions right?

Well, I personally believe that Jesus will come back again, because there were aspects of his life which were accurately predicted in the Old Testament; too many to be disregarded as mere coincidence. Think about it for a moment….what are the odds, that details of the life of one human being will be correctly predicted by different people, hundreds of years before that person is born? I am yet to read of any other person in history who has this record. Now here’s the thing; if several specific prophecies about the life of Jesus such as the ones that mention his hometown, tribe, family and details of his crucifixion were fulfilled, there is no doubt that those describing him as a conquering King, coming to judge the world , will surely come to pass. (See Micah 5:2, Psalm 22, Isaiah 53 and Daniel 7:13-14)

This absolutely unique attribute of Jesus as the embodiment of several ancient prophecies, is one of the reasons I believe He is who He claims to be, and will come back to the earth once more. I will share more reasons in subsequent podcast episodes, but for today, I pray for myself, and all, who like me have struggled with tough questions about the Christian faith, that the Holy Spirit, the great teacher, will direct us to accurate answers, and continually fill us with an unshakeable faith and confidence in God, Amen.
