Most of us have signed some form of contract at one time or another. Whether it’s an application for a bank account, filling out your tax form or signing a mortgage deed or tenancy agreement – your signature, whether on the dotted line or in the square box, brings a change in status but also commits you to do specific things in a certain way. Paul continues his forensic explanation of what our salvation involves as he reminds his readers of the condition they were once in. It’s as if they had contracted to themselves to a self centred way of life which could only ever bring heartache and pain. Escape from the contract was impossible using their own resources, redemption (payment of the debt and release from servitude) could only come from one source.
