Paul’s assessment of the human condition has detailed our failings but has recognised the possibility that our sins can be forgiven and the consequences of rebellion overcome. His understanding of hope centres on Christ: it is Christ who saves us – what He did has broken the power of sin as He gave His life willingly for us. This is both the complete answer and the basis of total transformation (see verses 18 and 19). There are no half measures where Christ is concerned – He wants us to live a full and fruitful life and for this to happen, the effect of His sacrifice must be total. Thank God that it was and it is!
