A party is something most of us look forward to. Whether it’s your birthday, a special anniversary or a celebration of some special achievement, it’s a great excuse for a get together. After all, there’s something really special about presents, your favourite food and time to chill with your friends. That’s all very well but what happens when everything is there but your guests aren’t? All the effort you’ve put in to invite the “in” crowd has been rewarded with a full table but lots of empty chairs. It’s a very good illustration of what the Kingdom of God will be like. In Jesus’ parable a lot of people are invited to a Great Banquet: it’s something really special but they (the expected guests), don’t turn up. Their places will be taken by the kind of people Jesus’ society and dead religion rejected. It reminds us that God’s invitation is issued to all without distinction. It doesn’t matter what present you bring, it’s the heart you bring with you that counts.
