It doesn’t look good, does it? We’re in a hole and neither our experience nor our application will be able to dig us out of it. It hasn’t, though, stopped people from trying in the (mistaken) belief that effort, combined with a bit of homespun natural philosophy, will bring meaning to life. If the picture is as bleak as Paul paints it, then where will we find the peace and hope we long for? There’s no immediate answer as chapter 3 begins, just a continuing reminder of humanity’s rejection of God’s hesed – His kindness, faithfulness and love. Israel’s expression of God’s commandments was neither consistent nor honest, which leads Paul to the conclusion that everyone is condemned as a result of sin – our broken relationship with God. There are no get out of jail cards where our ability to solve the problem is concerned. Hope comes through Jesus Christ – and can only come from Him. By His death he has dealt with the consequences of sin for all who have faith, a very inclusive understanding of the gospel reflecting our relationship with God not our background, ability nor experience.
